Driving along the shores of the Hokianga harbour, heading south, Opononi, takes you by surprise. It is a small town on the heads of the harbour, opposite the landscape is dominated by the sand dunes opposite. It is really very striking, driving around New Zealand you get very used to rolling green hills.
For this reason Opononi is a very special place. The town was established in the mid 1800’s, mainly as a stop for traffic heading north. Today it is a holiday & camping destination.
I spent most of my time in Opononi on the jetty admiring the sand dunes, and watching an approaching storm come in from the sea, as seen in the pic below. I narrowly escaped saturation when the rain came as a ran back to the car!
