This is the 100th entry on my Colours of New Zealand blog, and Te Mata Peak really deserves this status. Te Mata is just south of Hastings in the Hawke’s Bay and rises up to 399 meters. The peak itself is very popular with tourists, and the slopes are with hikers and mountain bikers. The suburb of Havelock North is built on it’s slopes.
The view from the top is exceptional. Rolling green hills as far as you can see stretch out before you, across the Heretaunga Plains. You also get great views of the Hawke’s Bay twonships of Napier and Hastings. On a clear day the view stretches as far as Mount Ruapehu!
No visit to the region is complete without a trip up the top. And with a sealed road all the way to the top it is an easy one too. We are returning to the Hawke’s Bay later in the year and are planning to trek to the top.
