In Auckland, when you think cheese, the very next thought is Puhoi Cheese. It is, in fact, a small village about 50km north of Auckland that is located on the Puhoi river. Puhoi translated means ‘slow water’, a reference to the river itself. The area was settled by German migrants who brought with them their culinary flair.
The Puhoi valley cheese store is a great place to stop and stock up on cheeses. I would recommend sampling some of the produce at the tasting counter to refine your choice. The triple cream brie and the aged cheddar are both amazing, and are the perfect start to any cheese board.
Grab a coffee and lunch from the counter and take in the grounds. Head up to Puhoi for lunch while staying in Auckland, or stop in while heading north for the weekend. Or even hire a kayak and explore the river.
