Kurow is a small town in the Waitaki District, in the South Island. It is located on the south bank of the Waitaki River. We drove south along the banks of the river, which treats you to stunning views of the river with snow capped mountains in the background..

The name Kurow is actually the Anglicized form of the name of the nearby mountain Te Kohurau.

In the 1920s the town was the base for the building of the nearby Waitakia Dam, and forming the Waitaki lake in the first of a series of hydro-electric projects on the Waitaki River.

The most famous son of Kurow is the most popular New Zealand All Black, and all round nice guy, Richie McCaw. He is the most capped rugby player in history, and famously captained the All Blacks to a second world cup in 2015.
