Tapeka Beach is a small township about a kilometer north of Russell. A sleepy beach-side area that has many bachs (beach houses), where many New Zealand, and international visitors, get away from the hectic life of the city.
We were doing exactly this as we stayed in the area in an apartment that backed onto the pebble beach east of the Tapeka Headland. It was wonderful to sleep with the sound of waves crashing on the beach below. We stayed at the Kokomo apartments, which were exactly the antidote we needed for a getaway. Our host, Christine, was very nice and knowledgeable on the region. She even booked dinner for us, at the Duke of Marlborough, the first night we arrived. Tapeka Beach is perfectly located to explore Russell and the surrounding area.
A must do if visiting the area is to walk up to the Tapeka Headland, which takes about an hour, along the cliffs that overlook Tapeka Beach and also the Bay of Islands itself. Appropriate footwear is recommended.
After the walk put your feet up and enjoy a beer or a glass of wine – you’ve earned it!
