Opua is a small town on the Bay of Islands. It is situated on the banks of the Waikare Inlet and is most known as being the gateway to Russell as it is where you can catch the car ferry across the water saving about half an hour on your journey to Russell.

Opua is also notable as being the first port for overseas yachts arriving in New Zealand after travelling across the Pacific Ocean. Interestingly, Opua was initially going to be called Newport according to the original town plans.

Opua is also home to many yachts and boats that are berthed there. There are also many houses perched on the steep inclines up from the inlet which would have great views of the entire area.

Sunset over Opua. If you look close you can see one of the houses and imagine the views it would take in of the inlet.
