Bishopdale is a suburb of Christchurch. It could be considered the gateway to the city being located close to the Christchurch International Airport. Bishopdale is also not far from Christchurch’s Orana Wildlife Park. The zoo is home to a vast range of wildlife, including the only zoo in New Zealand where you can see Gorillas.
The suburb is named after the three Bishop brothers, James (1826 – 1910), Robert (1827–1909) and William (1829–1903), who bought land in the area in 1858 or 1859 and established pip-fruit orchards. Initially, the area was called Bishopsdale, but the second ‘s’ was dropped from the name.
