Opunake

Opunake is a seaside town about 45 kilometres from New Plymouth. Settled in the 1880’s, it was originally intended to be where a port would be built. The port never was, which is good as the beach is here for all to enjoy.

The black sand of the beach is the inspiration for Dulux Opunake.

I highly recommend having an ice cream from the beach café, as the range of flavours is great, and the value for money is exceptional. You can order either one or two (very generous) scoops. I would only recommend getting one scoop, after ordering 2 scoops, I was observing the guy behind the counter creating the first scoop and changed to only one scoop based on the oversized single scoop!
